Up to 30% of your conversions are slipping through the cracks. Google Tag Gateway brings them back home.

Data accuracy has become one of the biggest challenges in digital marketing. Browser restrictions, such as Safari’s ITP, the widespread use of ad blockers, and increasingly strict privacy policies are causing valuable user data to slip through the cracks. Up to 30% of your conversions may be affected.

That’s where Google Tag Gateway (GTG) comes in: a solution designed to improve measurement quality and recover some of the data that would otherwise be lost.

What is Google Tag Gateway?

Google Tag Gateway is a technology that allows you to serve the Google Tag Manager (GTM) container and its associated tags (Analytics, Ads, etc.) from your own domain. This allows the browser to recognize them as first-party, reducing the impact of many of the restrictions that affect third-party resources.

More control over measurement, less noise in your data

Implementing this “tag gateway” is not just a technical compliance measure. It can also deliver a real strategic advantage:
  • More accurate data: recover events and conversions that are currently lost due to ad blockers and cookie restrictions.
  • Better GDPR compliance: enables cleaner, more controlled data processing, aligning with the standards Google will make mandatory in the future.
  • A faster website: by reducing calls to external domains, measurement can have less impact on website load times.
  • Greater resilience against ITP: by using first-party contexts, you can reduce the impact of tracking limitations in browsers such as Safari.

What does this mean for your hotel?

If you manage a hotel’s direct channel, that 30% of lost conversions translates into direct bookings that aren’t being properly attributed. And when you don’t know where a booking came from, everything else starts to wobble.

  • Your Google Ads campaigns may appear less profitable than they actually are.
  • Your direct channel may appear weaker than it really is compared with OTAs.
  • You’re making revenue and marketing decisions based on incomplete data.
Google Tag Gateway puts those bookings back on the map. You regain visibility into your direct channel, can better identify which campaigns are driving bookings and which aren’t, and gain greater control over your customer data.

How is Google Tag Gateway implemented?

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. GTG implementation depends on how your website is built and the infrastructure behind it. Cloudflare, AWS, and other providers offer different ways to implement it.

At Paraty Tech, we work with different configurations to find the option that best fits each hotel.

1. Streamlined implementation with AWS CloudFront

Amazon CloudFront allows you to configure GTG using CNAME records while maintaining control over your current DNS registrar. With guidance from Paraty Tech, this option allows you to add the Gateway without disrupting other critical infrastructure services.

2. Cloudflare and advanced configurations

Cloudflare offers automation options that simplify GTM integration. But it’s not the only option. Manual configurations can also be implemented across other CDNs and load balancers, such as Fastly or Google Cloud Load Balancer.

Privacy and international data transfers

A traditional GTM implementation may involve loading third-party libraries or consent management platforms (CMPs) whose servers are located in the United States. The issue? Some of these requests may send IP addresses and other identifiers outside the European Economic Area, which means the processing of this data needs to be assessed from a GDPR perspective.

Google Tag Gateway adds an additional layer of control by serving certain resources from your own domain. This means part of the request flow goes through your own infrastructure, giving you greater control over the data and how those requests are handled.

What if you want to measure beyond Google?

Here’s an important distinction: Google Tag Gateway is designed for Google tools such as Analytics and Google Ads. If you want to extend this architecture to platforms such as Meta or TikTok, you need to take it a step further: Google Tag Manager Server-Side. In this setup, data first passes through your own server and is then sent to each platform. More control over your data and measurement that is less dependent on the browser.

The trade-off is straightforward: it requires more infrastructure and maintenance. That’s why GTG can be the first step, with Server-Side as the next one when you need to expand the scope of your measurement.

Better measurement means better direct bookings

Google Tag Gateway is the logical next step for those who take data quality seriously. Whether you implement it through AWS or with a manual configuration, the goal is the same: stop relying on third parties for something that’s ultimately yours: measuring your own success.
